Why Math at ASA?
Supporting Every Student’s Journey Toward Opportunity, Confidence, and Innovation
Dear ASA Families,
At Allegiance STEAM Academy, we are deeply committed to providing every student with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to thrive — not only today, but well into the future. As part of that commitment, we are placing a school-wide focus on strengthening math learning across all grade levels this year.
Here’s why:
Math is a Gateway to Opportunity
Math is more than just numbers — it’s a powerful predictor of success in school, college, and life. Research shows that readiness for Algebra by 8th grade is one of the strongest indicators of high school graduation and college achievement. By helping students build a strong math foundation early, we are opening doors to their future.
Math Builds the Skills that Matter Most
In today’s world, students need more than content — they need to think critically, solve problems, and innovate. Math teaches exactly that. Whether students are learning to estimate, create models, or reason through complex situations, they are building the same skills used by engineers, doctors, designers, entrepreneurs, and other changemakers.
STEAM Careers Start with Strong Math Skills
As a STEAM school, we prepare students for a world full of exciting careers — from robotics to renewable energy, from biotech to aerospace. These fields demand strong math skills, and our students deserve to be ready for them.
Families Play a Powerful Role
You don’t need to be a math expert to support your child’s learning. What matters most is your encouragement, curiosity, and growth mindset. When students hear, “I believe in you,” or “Let’s figure this out together,” it makes a big difference. This year, we’ll be offering Family Math Nights, resources, and ongoing communication to help you feel confident and supported.
Our Promise
We’re committed to making math:
-
Equitable: All students can succeed in math with the right support.
-
Engaging: Math should feel meaningful and connected to the real world.
-
Empowering: Students will build confidence and see themselves as capable thinkers and doers.
Let’s work together to help our students thrive in math — because their future is worth it.
ASA’s first event for the family math series Equipping Families for Math Success is scheduled for September 3, 2025. The theme of this night is Growth Starts Here: Developing Mathematical Mindsets. The focus for this evening will be in changing how we talk about and approach math. Topics will include: the power of a growth mindset in math, avoiding “I am not a math person” language, and strategies for building math confidence at home.
We hope you’ll say, “Count Me In!” and we’ll see you there.
With gratitude,
ASA Leadership Team
